What is up world? It’s your friendly neighborhood tWitch here, about to share my thoughts on So You Think You Can Dance’s performance episode. I am currently in Atlanta, filming Stomp The Yard 2, but I will still be making sure to check in on you.
I am very excited to see Jamal Sims on the show. I find it refreshing to see the different relationships choreographers see in a duet. The tennis match idea he used in the piece he choreographed for Russell and Noelle was amazing. Tennis is high energy and so was the piece!!! With that high energy, however, comes the challenge of pace and full extension of the moves and choreography. Trust me, I feel the difficulty being a guy that’s 6' tall. But in that, you have to know exactly how much time you have to move and plan accordingly.
I loved the first wedding dance!!! Both Jakob and Ashleigh are amazing dancers!!! Would have liked the routine to be a bit more dreamy. When I think about the first dance with the future Mrs. Boss, I’d imagine that the connection would be more intense between us as opposed to the people that are watching. Don’t get me wrong, you are performing for the audience in the studio and at home, but as dancers you have the power to pull us into your world, rather than you dancing in ours. The passion of the moment before they kissed at the end needed to be mirrored throughout the whole routine.
First and foremost, I’m giving praise to Tyce for keeping it coming with the great concepts and choreography. Being born and raised in Montgomery, Ala., his piece from The Color Purple for Victor and Bianca hit close to home for me. But what did keep me at a distance is the authenticity of the mindset needed for this piece. Praise in the church is fueled by pure joy! You can’t fake something pure. Like each judge stated, it needed that something else outside the choreography that would make us forget about WATCHING the duet, and FEEL it. Again, a case of very talented and amazing dancers, but I just missed the meat of the meal being served. Hair should be messed up, clothed in disarray, etc. That’s losing it and that’s what we needed!!!
Big ups to Nakul for fusing jazz funk/hip-hop grooves into the traditional Bollywood style. Absolutely loved the lighting in the beginning. Set the piece off just right!!! Amazing hand shapes from both dancers. Nathan is dope. Did you see the way he turned and then slowly stopped and balanced on one foot? He had mad control and on the music? That is very difficult to pull off. Mollee just glows. I love how Nigel talks about them being the youngest couple this season. I think that it works in their favor because, in the midst of competition, they seem to remain hungry and fearless, two traits which are essential in order to survive.
I always look forward to a NappyTabs piece because it’s always entertaining and fresh!!! And when you have two dancers like Kevin and Karen that are going hard, it’s guaranteed to be funkyfresh!!! Yes, funkyfresh, I took two words and combined them into one!!!
Legacy and Kathryn — WOW! Once again, I find it truly humbling and inspiring when a b-boy submits to emotion in motion. What a wonderful partnership. They showed trust with all those lifts. And I think they both showed tremendous growth. For Legacy, embracing a new style and PERFORMING IT — NOT JUST DOING THE STEPS, BUT LIVING, BREATHING AND EATING THEM. And with Kathryn, I give her props for her patience and knowing how to work with a partner who is completely out of his comfort zone.
Also, welcome Stacey Tooky!!! William Wingfield (of the IV REAL season) always has the most wonderful things to say about her and I definitely see why. Beautiful job. I hope she will come back for more episodes in the future.
Wade is a genius!!! With that being said, I quote Adam Shankman in saying it takes 1000 percent commitment to make a Wade piece work, and that’s what Peter and Pauline gave. Also, I find it brilliant that he (Wade) decided to use the screens as part of the piece. Peter is a funny guy. I like the eyebrow thing. He commits to that, even if Nigel doesn’t appreciate it.
The last duet, Ryan and Ellenore, did the best piece of the evening. The connection between these two was electric!!! I was SO into them that when I finally noticed that her dress was stuck to the bottom of her heel, I just thought it was a costume choice. You couldn’t tell that it even mattered on her face!!! For that, I give the Beast Award to Eleanor for the night!!! I look forward to seeing more from this pair. I think they’ll be around for a while.
In reflection of the duets of the night, the bottom four — Bianca, Phillip, Victor and Noelle — didn’t surprise me. But to Bianca and Phillip, who went home, I do say this: This is not the end at all. This is the beginning!!! This show does not validate your talent. It’s a wonderful vehicle to show it to the world but it does not say just how talented you are and will continue to be. It is now time to work even harder. But working hard isn’t foreign to you … especially now!!! You can go on stage/camera in front of millions and commit to something that you may have never done before and perform the hell out of it!!! Now seriously, what can’t you do???
To those that are still in week after week, remain hungry and stay humble!!!! Working hard is a way of life, not an elective. Stay funky, fresh and IV REAL. Captain tWitch out!
